Events and Activities
Our McCord Memorial Library annual association meeting was held January 21, 2009. The budget for 2009 was passed by the members present. A state of the library report was given as well as information about the Keystone Grant project.
We had been awarded a Keystone Grant to repair and renovate the McCord library building. Keystone is a matching grant; we were allocated $73,000., which McCord Memorial Library must match to have the repairs completed. As of yet, only bid specifications, and bids approval signatures have been accomplished. No work has begun. We will have to have all the invoices in and submitted by mid summer, 2010.
Our circulation increased 4 % over 2008; our computers, including Internet use, lab and WiFi, increased 14% from the last calendar year. We added 3,935 items to the collection and discarded 4,081 items. Our total collection size is: 46,068 items. Our interlibrary statistics for 2009 included 7,890 items borrowed from other libraries and sent to McCord Memorial Library; while we sent 7,988 to other libraries.
The Friends of the Library Speaker Series was very successful. We featured “Travels in the Holy Land”, by Elsie Holl and Park United Methodist Church; “Kristallnacht and the Holocaust” by Hans Haurwitz; “Knowing an Authentic Antique from a Pseudo One” by August Fetcko; and “Exploring the North Channel by Sail” by Eric Marshall. A lecture by Joel Barnum who spoke on the Battle of Gettysburg was appreciated in July.
The Friends of the Library also coordinated two books sales, one in March and one in October. Both were quite successful with many local donations and volunteers. Sales from our used books netted more than $5000. in 2009.
We currently have one book discussion club: Grades 6th – 8th girls and their mothers meet and discuss current and interesting topics for teens. New members are always welcome
Parenting classes were hosted again in 2009. They were conducted by the Erie Family Center and were free and open to the community during the months of April, May, September, October, November, and December.

TWEENS AND TEENS
We had a successful summer reading program for ’tweens and teens. During the eight weeks from June 22 – August 15, a total of 229 students participated. Teen Read Week was celebrated at McCord Memorial Library October 19 – 24. Participants brought a non-perishable item for the Move the Mountain Community Food Drive, checked out a book to read, and entered a prize drawing.
ADULT SUMMER READING PROGRAM
The 2009 adult summer reading program theme was “master the art of reading”. Patrons filled out an entry card for every book read and entered the cards into a weekly drawing for great prizes. Final evaluation of 2009: 1222 entry cards were handed out; 502 entry cards returned; and 8 prizes were given out. In the eight weeks of the program there were a total of 502 entries and 104 participants. This was by far the largest number of adult patrons to take part in our adult summer reading program since its inception 4 years ago.
We are most grateful for the support of the following North East merchants: Boston Bean Café, Bova’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, Film Fest Video, Freeport Restaurant, La Casa de Pizza, McDonald’s, Michael’s Restaurant & Pizzeria, Straw Hat Drive In, and Subway of North East. Everyone enjoyed prizes and appreciated the generosity of our local businesses.
North East McDonald’s donated 500 coupons for a hamburger or cheeseburger and a small drink. These coupons were principally used as registration prizes and later supplemented children’s, teens, and adult weekly prizes.
We wish to thank all the people who volunteered and donated to McCord Memorial Library in 2009. Our book sales, speaker series, wine fest and annual appeal are all possible because of the wonderful community of North East.
