McCord Receives the Keystone Grant*

McCord Memorial Library went through the complicated process of applying for the Keystone grant award and has had the honor of being selected to receive the grant money.

We will use the grant money to improve the building so that it may serve you, as a patron, and the community at large to its greatest capacity.  The upcoming improvements include repair and restoration of the masonry of the building, renovation of the interior lighting, replacement of the built-in copper gutters, interior painting and plaster restoration, and air conditioning repair for the children’s library area.

The needs for this grant were developed from the Strategic Plan in 2006. Below are the committee reports from last year’s Annual Association Meeting, detailing the goals and planning of each committee.

* What is the Keystone Grant Award?

The Keystone Grant award is an award given by the state to nonprofit, public agencies. The fund was established by the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1993 using revenue from the voter-approved sale of bonds and from a portion of the state realty transfer tax. “Keystone Historic Preservation Grants requiring a 50/50 cash match are available for the preservation, restoration and/or rehabilitation of historic resources listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. The grants are administered on a competitive basis, and the awards are made annually based on a peer review process” ( http://www.artsnet.org/phmc).

GE employees and retirees: Because McCord Memorial Library is eligible for the GE Foundation’s “More Gifts, More Givers” program, approved gifts from GE employees and retirees will be matched on a dollar-for-dollar basis, effectively doubling your gift to McCord!  To approve your gift, please call the toll free GE Foundation Customer Service Center at: 1-800-305-0669 or go online at < www.gefoundation.com/matchinggifts>     Verizon and other employers also match donations, so please ask your employers if they do the same.

Donate Empty Inkjets to Help McCord

Recycle Inkjet · Reduce Pollution · Raise Funds

What to do:
1. Most of us have inkjet printers at home or work. Next time when you have an empty cartridge, don’t throw it away.
2. Just put it in a Ziploc bag or the original cartridge box and bring it to McCord Memorial Library, 32 West Main S
t. North East, PA 3. We have a special recycle box at the front desk.

Benefits to the library:

  • The library will be paid up to $4.00 for each cartridge with a print head.
  • Prompt cash payment for our library when a filled box is sent.
  • McCord patrons have already raised over $350 for the library!

    Benefits to our community:

  • Reduce pollution. Cartridges do not decompose for 1,000 years.
  • Save energy. Empty ones can be remanufactured and reused.
  • No buying, no selling, no burden to anyone.

    Which cartridges:

  • Cartridges with a print head are qualified for payment. That includes most of Hewlett Packard, Lexmark, Compaq, Canon, Dell, Brother, and Apple.
  • Cartridges without a print head do not qualify for payment. That includes all Epson.
  • If you cannot tell the difference, bring it in anyways.

Everybody helps. We can make a difference.

  • You can also get empties from friends, neighbors, and small businesses.
  • On average, a person uses 2 cartridges a year.
  • The potential is huge.
